Our company history since 1928
1920–1929
John McGowan Sr. established the company with a flatbed Mack truck and a six-wheel dump truck, focusing on excavation services and laying the foundation for four generations of excellence.
1930–1939
The company built a strong local reputation for excavation projects, securing its first municipal and commercial contracts.
1940–1949
Expanded operations during wartime infrastructure demand, reinforcing its role in public works and long-term municipal partnerships.
1950–1959
John Jr. and Peter McGowan assumed leadership, introducing asphalt paving, masonry, and drainage services to meet evolving client needs. The company also refined its expertise in grading and site prep.
1960–1969
Invested in advanced machinery and broadened its capabilities in road construction, working on larger public and commercial jobs throughout Long Island and New York State.
1970–1979
Established itself as a trusted partner for local government agencies, schools, and institutions, continuing steady growth with a reputation for reliability and craftsmanship.
1980–1989
Invested in modern equipment and strengthened its role in municipal and commercial contracting. Expanded its service footprint and capacity across Nassau and Suffolk counties.
1990–1999
Third-generation leadership began with John and Jim McGowan.
2000–2009
- Expanded capabilities with acquisitions of McGowan Contracting Inc. and O'Donnell Seal Coating Inc.
- Fourth-generation leadership began with John Andrew McGowan.
2010–2019
Continued leadership under John Andrew McGowan, focusing on equipment diversification and modernization of services.
2020–Present
- Fourth-generation leadership expanded with Jessica, Sara and Carly McGowan.
- Acquired Anthony T. Deos Corp (2022) and O’Neill Construction Co. Inc. (2023), boosting capabilities.
- Surpassed 100,000 pavers installed, marking a new growth milestone.
