Most asphalt driveway damage starts as a crack, and a crack is the cheapest thing on your driveway to fix. Water gets in, freezes, and pushes the edges apart a little more each winter. John McGowan & Sons repairs asphalt driveways across Nassau County and Suffolk County, and we start every job by working out how deep the problem really goes.

Repair, Resurface or Replace

Not every damaged driveway needs the same fix. Pavement preservation guides, like this pavement distress and preservation treatment chart from NCDOT, match each treatment to the condition of the surface. One rule applies everywhere: an overlay only lasts if the damage underneath is fixed first.

Crack sealing suits narrow cracks in an otherwise sound surface. Asphalt crack repair means cleaning the crack and filling it so water stays out. Pothole repair and asphalt patching suit failed areas, where we cut out the bad asphalt and replace it with hot mix asphalt. Driveway resurfacing, also called an asphalt overlay, suits widespread cracking on a solid base, with milling first where the surface needs it. Replacement suits sunken areas, standing water and a failed road base, where a new blacktop driveway costs less than repeated repairs.

Patch the damagePotholes and small failed areas. We cut out the bad asphalt and replace it with hot mix, so the patch is part of the driveway and not a pile on top.
Resurface itWidespread cracking and wear on a base that is still solid. A new layer of asphalt goes over the old one, with milling first where needed. About overlays.

Why Long Island driveways crack

Long Island is hard on asphalt. A Stony Brook University climate scientist told CBS New York that Long Island sees more freeze and thaw days than New York City and even colder regions, because the island is surrounded by water.

Every cycle works water further into a crack. Add heavy delivery trucks, tree roots and drainage that sends runoff across the driveway instead of away from it, and a small crack becomes a pothole by spring.

That is why we look at where water goes before we quote the repair.

  1. Walk the drivewayWe look at the cracks, the low spots, the edges and where water sits after rain.
  2. Give you a straight answerSeal, patch, resurface or replace. You get a detailed estimate, and it is free.
  3. Prepare the surfaceDamaged asphalt is cut out, cracks are cleaned, and the area is made ready so new material bonds.
  4. Repair and finishHot mix goes in, gets compacted, and is finished so water drains off instead of sitting.

Driveways that are more than asphalt

Many Long Island driveways combine asphalt with pavers, Belgium block or stone. If yours does, a repair has to respect both materials. The edge where asphalt meets a paver apron is often where water gets in.

McGowan is a paving and masonry company, so one crew can fix the asphalt, reset the apron and repair the edge, with no second contractor to coordinate. See our masonry and hardscaping work.

What is under the asphalt

A driveway is only as strong as what it sits on. A properly built driveway starts with a compacted road base of stone, then one or more layers of hot mix asphalt on top. Commercial parking lots with heavy truck traffic follow the same layered logic on a bigger scale.

Road baseCompacted stone that carries the load and drains water away from the surface.
Binder courseOn larger roads, a structural layer of hot mix between the base and the top.
Surface courseThe finish course you see and drive on. It sheds water and takes the wear.

Driveway sealcoating protects the top of that system, but a sealcoat cannot hold up a failed base. When the base has settled, we handle driveway removal and asphalt removal, rebuild the base, and then pave. For a worn surface on a good base, milling and paving takes off the top layer and replaces it. Pothole repair and crack filler work belong to the same family of fixes, and all of them work best when the damaged area is cut back to solid material.

They do what they say and follow up well.

Driveway repair questions

Can a damaged asphalt driveway be repaired?
Often, yes. Cracks can be cleaned and filled, potholes can be cut out and patched, and a worn but sound driveway can be resurfaced. If the base has failed, repair only delays the problem, and we will tell you so.
How much does it cost to repair an asphalt driveway?
It depends on the size of the damaged area, the depth of the repair, the condition of the base, drainage and access. We give a detailed written estimate after we look at the driveway, and the estimate is free.
Should I repair or replace my driveway?
Repair makes sense when the damage is limited and the base is solid. Replacement makes sense when there is sunken pavement, standing water or widespread failure, because patching those areas rarely lasts.
Can driveway repairs be done in cold weather?
Cold weather limits what a permanent asphalt repair can do. We will tell you honestly what can wait for warmer weather and what should be handled sooner to keep water out of the cracks.
Does sealcoating fix a damaged driveway?
No. Sealcoating is maintenance for a driveway in good shape. Cracks and potholes need to be repaired first.
Do you offer a guarantee?
Yes. Our work carries a one year workmanship guarantee, subject to contract terms.
